I really do judge a book by its cover, and if the synopsis draws me in, I will read it. What I’m really bad at is finding out beforehand whether I am launching myself slap/bang into the middle of a series without having read any of the previous volumes.

Case in point: The Frieda Klein series by Nicci French.

I was on holiday in Gran Canaria and ran out of books (too much free time on my hands!), however the hotel had a little shelf where you could swap your read books for unread ones, and keep recycling.

One that caught my eye was Saturday Requiem, by Nicci French.

I loved it. I was hooked from the start, and finished it within a day (well, there wasn’t much to do except laze around in the sun, reading!).

Only problem is, this was #6 in the Frieda Klein series, and I hadn’t read 1-5.

And so, it’s time to remedy that.

Yesterday I started reading Blue Monday, the first story in the series, and as I write this I am currently 298 pages in and rueing the fact that I actually have to do stuff, and can’t just sit here with my cup of tea and relish the last 100 or so pages.

I will post a full review once I’ve made it to the end, but it’s a definite page-turner, as I knew it would be, and it’s on course for a 5/5 at this rate.
